Bahrain National Museum

The Bahrain National Museum is a great place to get a taste for the history of Bahrain and introduce yourself to this interesting and little known island nation.

The museum's highlights include several ancient pieces of various pottery and archeologically related things and its interesting various artificial reproductions of cultural things (like the men having coffee above).

In addition the museum has a lengthy display and history of pearl diving and dhow building, both unique elements of Arabian Gulf culture.

A highlight of the museum's historical collection are the artifacts and relics from the island's "Dilmun" period, Dilmun was an ancient land in the region dating back to 3000 BC (mentions of it at least). Very little is known about the period or where exactly Dilmun was though several historical documents do reference the region.

In addition to its historical exhibits the museum has a section on contemporary artwork and a crafts store where you can buy both historical reproductions and modern day arts and crafts type of wares.

The museum itself is a modern and comfortable building near the waterfront equipped with gift and snack shops, w/c, and everything to be able to make a nice half day visit.

If you only pick one place to see while in Bahrain the Museum is a good choice to get a feel for the island's culture and regional history.

Their website is currently not online but any hotel you will stay at will have up to date info on the museum. It's usually open except for Fridays and the price is typically a very modest 500 fils or so. Located on the Al-Fatih highway.
