Museum of Pearl Diving
Before (and after, frankly) there was oil there were pearls and the Arabian Gulf was dotted with pearl farms and pearl dhows with free divers diving meters down with no scuba gear to retrieve pearl oysters wild or farmed. Pearl Diving was and is an integral part of Bahraini and gulf culture and economy and you can learn all about it at the Museum of Pearl Diving in Bahrain. While the displays and photography upstairs are very interesting the museum is quite small so don’t be prepared to spend all day here but you should swing by for a visit even if you live in Bahrain as the amount of information is quite substantial. The displays range from the history of pearl diving and all of the art’s/sport’s accoutrements (which surprisingly have not changed very much over the decades of its inception) but the museum contains several other displays and interesting things as well. Some of these are an impressive photographic tour of the history of Bahrain as well as a collection of historical items from Bahrain like clothing, music and instruments, weaponry and more. Admission is small, around 500 fils, but since it’s a convenient location (Government Avenue & Souq in Manama) the museum is definitely worth a visit. Open mornings and afternoons except for Friday (closed). Phone number is 17 210 600. The building the museum is housed in is worth a note as well, it was the original Ministry of Justice and Islamic Affairs of Bahrain.
