Automatic Restaurant – Abu Dhabi

For some of the best chicken shawarmas in the world, head to the Abu Dhabi cafeteria branch of the decades old Automatic Restaurant on Hamdan Street.

The Automatic has been around since the 1970s and was one of the first and most popular Lebanese eateries specializing in Lebanese and Gulf fare for the casual snacker to hundreds of wedding guests.

Before you head out to whatever fancy and overpriced and underspiced restaurant your hotel magazine tells you you must try you won’t have experienced the Gulf, or a shawarma, until you’ve eaten at the Automatic.

It must be cautioned that only their cafeteria in Abu Dhabi makes shawarmas and only in the evening, their restaurants in Abu Dhabi (across the street) and Dubai and elsewhere do have several tasty Arabic dishes but you’ll miss out if you don’t have a shawarma at their cafeteria.

The cafeteria is jam packed with take out orders and various groups of men (upstairs seating for families and women), service is quick and the food gets from the shawarma cutter outside to your table in just a few minutes.

You can’t go wrong with anything you order here but their chicken shawarma is something special.  Nestled in a small cut pita bread are strips of chicken from the outdoor spit, a few French fries, some pickles and some of the most intense garlic sauce you will ever experience (believe me, you don’t want to eat these things before boarding a long flight).  The taste combination is incredible.

It’s strange how many different types of shwarmas there are in Abu Dhabi and in the Arab world and elsewhere and I’ve eaten tons of them to be sure.  These are the best in my opinion.

The restaurant is known for their mezze staples, hummus, tabouli, kibbe, olives, fatoush, etc.  And don’t pass up their mint tea either.

You’ll always have fresh and fast and incredibly tasty food at the Automatic and that it’s packed with locals testifies that.
