Dubai-Paradise on Earth

by Bina Khiani

Dubai is the second largest emirate of the United Arab Emirates Federation, comprising  of two twin cities Dubai and Deira which are separated by a narrow creek. Although Dubai is not the capital city of the UAE, it has become the trade and commercial center  of the country. In Dubai, most of the population consists of expatriates from the Indian subcontinent and it is believed more than 165 nationalities live in this modern, cosmopolitan city.

Before the discovery of oil, the chief occupation of the people of Dubai was pearl diving, agriculture, trade and ship building. The country was somewhat poor and undeveloped but enjoyed strategic importance due to its excellent location between Europe and the Far East . Pearl diving was the chief occupation of the people but with the advent of cultured pearls, the demand for natural ones diminished.  This led to a crash in the pearl industry. The progressive ruling and wisdom of Sheikh Saeed bin Maktoum initiated the steering of Dubai towards an economy which was independent of pearl diving, relying instead on trade and commerce.
