Encouraging tourism has also helped put Dubai on the world map very quickly. Before 1990, Dubai International Airport was busy but today the ultra-modern, luxurious Sheikh Rashid Terminal is probably one of the busiest and best airports in the world. To lure tourists, the Rulers launched “Dubai Shopping Festival” and “Summer Shopping Festival” which gained Dubai the reputation of the premier shopping destination of the world. The Global village where craftsmen and traders from various countries around the world showcase their products, has already attained international fame .Tourists from around the world flock to Dubai during the shopping festival to witness magnificent shows, events, spectacular fireworks and illuminations. Each year during the festival, the city is colorfully lit using new unique ideas and concepts, transforming it into almost a “fairyland”. The grand finale to the Dubai Shopping Festival is the World Cup which is the world’s richest horse race event, comparable to the Ascot Races. The Dubai Desert Classic (Golf) and the Dubai Tennis Open are other sporting events which have won International acclaim and made Dubai a landmark in International sports.
