Practical Information - Cyprus Essentials Pg. 2
GETTING AROUND There are no buses or limousines from the airport, and no taxi rank,
so one has to telephone for a taxi. In town, there are conventional
urban taxis, and also "shared taxis". These are 8-seater Mercedes
cars following specific routes, mainly inter-city. There are no trains
in Cyprus. There are lots of car-hire companies - both at the airport and in towns.
You can book and pay for a hire car in your home country before you
leave. If there is more than one driver, there is an extra daily charge of
CY£2.50. Some companies ask for a refundable collision deposit,
which is invoiced to the driver's credit card, but not debited unless
the car is damaged. The main motorways in Cyprus are excellent. Driving through the very narrow winding village streets is more of an adventure. Like most ex-Brit colonies, Cypriots drive on the left of the road.
WHERE TO STAY There are three main kinds of accommodation in Cyprus: · Hotels. Much the same as any other hotel in the world. Prices
range from about CY£20 to CY£100 pppn. Many off-season specials.
There was a very good hotel in Lemesos that charged CY£34 B&B
for two! This is the Golden Arches Hotel on the eastern outskirts of
the city · In Platres - high up in the Trudos mountains. Edelweiss Hotel,
55, Kaledonia Street, Pano Platres. CS£24 for two persons - including
breakfast! Tel. 254 21335. Manager Mr. George Papas. Easy to find. Ask
in the town for directions. · Hotel Apartments. Self-catering, four-room apartments, in an
establishment that also supplies light meals if you wish. Costs: CY£30
to 40 per apartment (Two persons). Examples: In Larnaka - Petrou Bros. Hotel Apartments, 1, Armenika Eklisias
St., Larnaka. Tel: 246 50600; e-mail: petroumarios@cytanet.com.cy. CY£30
per night for two persons. Quite hard to find, as this is usually the
first stop in Cyprus. Ask directions at the airport. · In Polis - Bougainvillea Hotel Apartments, 13, Verginas St.,
Polis. CS£30 - 35 per night for two persons. Lovely setting -
swimming pool. Tel. 268 12250; e-mail: reservations@bougainvillea.com.cy.
Manager, Mr. Stavros Ioannou. Easy to find. It's on the road to the
beach, and Polis is a fairly small town. · In Lefkosia (Nicosia) - Lordos Hotel Apartments. 18 Sina Street, Lefkosia. CS£30 per night for two persons. Tel: 2266 71039, e-mail: dolordos@spidernet.com.cy. It's best to book ahead in the summer high season - June, July, August. Same in the Troodos area for the winter-sports season - December to February. In September it's not necessary to book ahead. On an open-plan tour, it's helpful to ask the hotel or apartment manager to recommend a few places in the next town, and to phone ahead to enquire. They can often get a better offer than the guest would. There are no B&Bs or private-home accommodation in Cyprus.
