Eleftheria Square & Laiki Yitonia - Nicosia, Cyprus
At present there is a competition underway to redesign this square into a useable tourist and visiting area without disturbing the history of the square. Read more about it on the Nicosia Municipality's page here to see who won. There is presently a large clock tower and some seating around the area which is usually crowded with Cypriots hanging out. Go and join them, and buy a drink from the nearby stands as well. The square is the central point of Nicosia and often features concerts, gatherings, and other community events. The square also links the old part of the city with the newer part. The older part leads into the area of Laiki Yitonia, a pedestrian-only zone featuring shops, cafés, bars, and restaurants, and a couple of hotels as well. This is a nice area to browse and eat typical Cypriot food as well. All of the "streets" are really cobble-stone type alleys which wind about in old historical buildings and restaurants. What is so nice about this area is that it really isn't affected too much by tourism and doesn't seem like a "trite" type of place to visit (vs. the pyramids in Egypt, which are just over-run with touters offering everything from a junky camel ride to a necklace made in Taiwan). Here in Nicosia, the Cypriot people are so warm that after a while you'll feel like a member of the family. At night the area is quite a wonderful place to explore and eat at one of the restaurants, or just sit on an outdoor table at a café or bar and while away the hours watching people go by. A nice place to relax, and be safe. for inquiries and comments (non-commercial only please): go.mideast @ yahoo.comCopyright ©2003-2008 gomideast.com unless otherwise credited |
