Cairo Travel Guide

Cairo is rightfully known as being one of the Middle East's central
cities, straddling the East and the West, located near the meeting
points of Africa, Asia and Europe and one of the oldest metropolitan
cities in the world. The city of Cairo has its roots
beginning about 600 AD (M) though its official name Al-Qahira was
"only" given in 969 AD during the Fatimid period. Egypt, of
course, has its ancient roots stretching back thousands of years.
Cairo somehow still straddles these time periods as well: thousands of
years of the area's history, medieval Cairo, Islam, Roman Empire,
5-star hotels, donkey carts on the freeway, frenetic pace of traffic,
people everywhere, choking exhaust, street venders selling everything
imaginable, taxi drivers who defy the laws of traffic and gravity and
speed limits, shifty hustlers, beggars, the upper class, and the
ubiquitous signs of the country's conservatives with its hijabs and
crowds of people during prayer time.
Whatever you take from Cairo it will be an experience that you will not
likely forget anytime soon. Whether you are a backpacking
college student or a 60-something American retiree on a package tour,
you will be struck by the city's magnificent presence and overwhelming
personality.
If you are a tourist in Cairo you will undoubtedly hit up some of these
places but don't limit yourself to them though they are worth the visit
in themselves:
The Egyptian Museum
Khan El-Khalili
Old Cairo
The Pyramids at Giza
