Camping at a Biblical Site

pictures and article by Raquel de Jesus

Also known as the Sea of Galilee or Lake Tiberias, the Kineret is the favourite summer destination in the north of Israel. It’s an enormous lake, surrounded by pebble beaches, known biblically as the place where Jesus walked on the waters. At one end is the city of Tiberias; at the other, the Golan Mountains, formerly belonging to Syria.

The Golan is also well-known for being a wine producing region and if you enjoy wine, you’ll love to take a tour on the Golan Heights or the Galil Mountain wineries. Aside from the wine itself, they offer other activities, such as visiting The Golan Waterfalls, the Golan Antiquaries Museum (Golan Heights), biking or admiring the Nachal Haalon Nature Reserve (Galil Mountain). Ask about these trips while in Tiberias, at the tourism offices.

To access most of the beaches, in spite of being public property, you need to pay. This serves, on the other hand, to provide for shade and grass on the camping site, along with showers and toilets, children playgrounds and even some water sports or amusements, like the “bananas.” There are some free beaches, but these don’t have as many commodities and are frequently unattended.

In the Kineret, camping takes a whole new meaning: in the many beaches around the lake, you can find the customary hippies, entire families and youths from all around the country. Some bring not only their tents, but also stoves, fans and electric generators to feed all sorts of gadgets.

The water is warm and mild and you’re guaranteed to make friends as all the campers roam from campfire to campfire sharing their narguilas and the ocasional bottle of wine. Warning: if you go or return on a Saturday, you’ll find no buses from there to Tiberias, so either you pay for a taxi (which, although you can bargain, will charge a lot) or hitchhike (perfectly safe here - everyone does it).
