Ma'daba
Just South of Amman is this important city known for its collections of mosaics. Definitely worth a day trip, or a half day trip, as it is only some 20 minutes from Amman. Ma'daba's major claim to fame is on the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, where at Madaba's museum you can still marvel at the elaborate "Mosaic Map of Palestine." Known as the oldest map in the world, the mosaic gives an elaborate picture of the Holy Land and its surroundings. Madaba is also the place to go to experience the old world charm of the bustling marketplace, complete with enticing salesmen and the ever present aroma of brewing tea and coffee. Look into guided trips into the area from your hotel as that would be the best bet for getting a good overview of the city, though always be on the lookout for tours that steer you toward a certain shop, as you will definitely be missing out on a good price somewhere else nearby. <---- back to Jordanian City Index for inquiries and comments (non-commercial only please): go.mideast @ yahoo.comCopyright ©2003-2008 gomideast.com unless otherwise credited |
