Wadi Rum

For those who want to experience the true feeling of the desert, an overnight trip to Wadi Rum is imperative. You won't ever see so many stars or hear so much nothingness almost anywhere else on the planet.

South toward the Red Sea city of Aqaba, way Southeast in the Jordanian desert, lies Wadi Rum. A "Wadi" is an area, usually in a desert region, that has a dried up river running through it. It is usually marked by a valley with large cliffs and mountains surrounding it. Some Wadis throughout the Middle East have experienced some flash floods, but it is a very rare, and in the case of Wadi Rum rarer than a shark bite, occurance.

In Wadi Rum the horizon stretches forever, the mountains seem to be nearby, but are miles and miles away. Sound evaporates and the peacefulness of nothingness descends on you (depending on who you are camping with, that is…).

Wadi Rum is the outdoor lover's dream. Camping, hiking (for beginners to the most experienced), 4x4 vehicle exploration, mountain climbing, and motorcycle/quad riding are just some of the things you can occupy your time with. Of course there are the ubiquitous camels to ride through the Wadi, for those of you getting in touch with the incredible natural beauty of the area.

All of these activities can be arranged fairly easily through any hotel reception or tour agency in Amman, or even online. If you are travelling here it is likely you are camping, and should have all of that taken care of way in advance, you don't want to show up and expect to find your way around easily - if you do you will be taken advantage of.
