Learning Arabic in Damascus Syria

mosque

(classroom at damascus university)

Damascus Syria is a great place to learn Arabic for a number of reasons: 1. The inexpensive nature of the courses (comparatively) and inexpensive places to stay and relative ease of getting around, etc. 2. Most people in Syria only speak Arabic (which is very different from many countries in the Middle East) and their spoken Arabic is very close to the "Modern Standard Arabic" 3. The number of other students in similar situations to you mean that you won't be alone in anything you try to do or learn in Syria.

Here is a guide based on a learning trip I did in 2008 and is good for anyone going to Syria to learn Arabic but also doubly good for any Americans interested in doing so as it has US specific rules and "nuances" that you have to go through.

I studied at Damascus University but also was friends with people who studied elsewhere so this guide has a DU focus but I've also mentioned other places and what they are all about as well.

Check out my "Learning Arabic" page as well for more online resources and Arabic language study skills.
