Damascus Hostel, Syria

Choices of Accommodation in the Hostel:

The only thing really “hostel” about this place is that some of the rooms share a bathroom.  You won’t be staying in a large room with a bunch of beds or with strangers in the same room.  They have several private rooms and some larger rooms.

Most of the rooms come with hot/cold shower and Western toilet.  They also all have a/c and heat.  The larger multi-bed rooms also come with satellite TV.

Damascus Hostel is kind of a mix between a cheap hotel and a really nice hostel.

The beds are decent, if a bit narrow.  Some of the rooms are small and the showers that are in the rooms are very small as well.  But that said, it is a nice convenience at a relatively cheap price.

Here are some pictures of my small private room (see rates and more info after them):

The prices vary, however.  They have student rates for students studying Arabic that are really great.  I think they range around $375 US for a private room for five weeks with a shared bath.  The shared bath has one Western toilet, one Arabic toilet and two showers.  During my time as a student there for five weeks I never had to wait for either the toilet or shower and the hostel was relatively full.

Other rooms for short term stay are more expensive and can range from $30-50 US a night but given all of the conveniences that the hostel has it’s well worth it.  There’s one somewhat cheaper room that has a three foot ceiling and a ladder to get to, and you can also rent floorspace and sleep outside if the weather permits.
